Though he took a couple years off to teach himself guitar he eventually fell back into his old piano playing ways and started writing songs. His music has been described as a mash up of old saloon style mixed with a little jazz and touch of folk funk; if such a thing exists. He lived in Santa Cruz for 5 years and played at many of the local venues there. He currently lives in San Francisco and is working on his much anticipated first album to be released this summer.

The Welcome Matt: http://welcomemattsf.com
Resurrecting Shannon Hoon's velvety harmonies to guide pop's light into a sleepy night, The Welcome Matt produces an intriguing thing of pure emotion with his second release, Empire Days. Sumptuously gliding vocals that not only slide easily off the tongue but also have something to say, paired superbly with a lilting minimalist musical construction, make for a record daring you to pass it by. Drifting somewhere between Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Bob Dylan, Matt Langlois has mastered a sense of lyrical spacing and rasping and dreamy opinion to produce an album so perversely alluring, it's nearly obscured by its own charm.

Dgiin: http://www.myspace.com/dgiin
Gin, as most of us know it, is a strong colorless alcohol flavored with juniper berries. Another less widespread meaning of the word djinn is a mischievous spirit, often confined to a bottle due to reprehensible acts. Dgiin is better known around Sonoma County as a band with a unique style encompassing various cultures and influences and songs sung mainly in French. The band originated 8 years ago in Santa Rosa and can be described as French-Gypsy-Funk with a twist. The Flamenco-Django-esque band puts on one memorable show accessible to all types of tastes and ages. Their energetic performances draw a lively crowd that can dance all night.

Their debut EP Safe in The Sound is an introduction to this fantasy world drawn from real experiences of excitement and solitude its creators shared in moving to New York City.

The story is based around the world of a fictional character named Grace, who on the eve of her 50th birthday begins to question her happiness and the choices she's made in her life. When she receives news that her estranged father, a failed inventor, has died, she returns to her childhood home to help settle his affairs. While cleaning out his study, she uncovers early designs for a paper raincoat, the invention on which he staked their family fortune, and that subsequently tore the family apart when it failed to sell. She is flooded with intense memories of a pivotal day in that very room, when she made the conscious decision to give up on her dream of becoming a writer in order to avoid the disastrous effects that happened as a result of her father’s choices. She starts to question whether there might have been a better way for her life to unfold, and decides to find out by rewriting her own story in a novel she titles The Paper Raincoat.

The songs are a cinematic blend of pop-folk orchestral arrangements, peppered with electronic textures, and overflowing with unforgettable melodies. "Our goal was to create songs that were enjoyable on any level”¦” adds Alex. “”¦Catchy and meaningful enough for listeners to relate to whether they knew the back-story or not. Once they liked the music, we felt discovering the story hidden inside the songs would only increase their connection to them."

Alex and Amber have been collaborators and friends for several years, starting with a chance meeting at a wintry show in Buffalo NY and Amber's subsequent decision to become the first official stalker of Alex's previous band, The Animators. Nowadays, both Amber and Alex are experienced and thriving musicians in their own right. Amber is creating an international buzz as a solo artist with over 1,000,000 plays on MySpace, three month-long European tours, the most recent with guitarist/songwriter Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Amos Lee), and a First Place Award in the International Songwriting Competition (Lyrics), which was judged in part by her musical hero, Tom Waits. Amber's new record will be released this summer, and she will be touring all over the nation and again in Europe this Fall. Alex has since signed up on the long waiting list to stalk her in return.

Meanwhile, Alex has been cultivating a reputation as a sought-after artist, composer and producer in NY and LA. His former band, the Animators, achieved much national attention and critical acclaim before their 2007 breakup. He now writes, performs and records with several prominent NYC artists, including Vienna Teng (Rounder/Universal), and just completed production duties on her upcoming record. His original score for the play, Everyman For Himself won a 2006 LA WEEKLY THEATER AWARD for best original music. Alex co-produced Amber's first solo record in fall 2004, as well as her 2006 EP, Unfinished Art, as well as produced and arranged the Paper Raincoat's debut EP.

The group celebrated the release of Safe in the Sound in March with a string of concerts at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles, Canal Room in NYC, and Club Passim in Boston. IndieSoundsNY.com describes their live show as “bringing a sense of wonder and whimsical optimism into life.” Rubarth adds, “The live shows are quirky, too, with all of the different instruments and harmonies. It feels cinematic”¦ but not in a goofy way.” The Paper Raincoat’s latest New York residency at Rockwood sold out 3 weeks in a row, and since then the band has managed to rack up some impressive accolades, including being selected by iTunes as an Indie Spotlight Artist the very first week the album was available online, and play some high profile gigs on both coasts, including two shows at The Bowery Ballroom (o/f The Spring Standards, and another with Pete and J), a gig at the Somerville Theater in Boston (Part of Club Passim's 50th Anniversary show), and the Palace of Fine Arts in SF (opening for Vienna Teng). The band is being embraced out of the gates by industry and fans alike, and in addition to having secured several TV/film placements.

~Avi Vinocur
At 23 years old, Avi Vinocur’s folk music bleeds the love of classic novels and poetry that so enthrall the mind of this San Francisco based singer-songwriter. His songs draw comparisons to a young Bob Dylan or Paul Simon: maintaining elegant melodies with lyrics that stand alone as poems.

His live performances have earned him regular positions in coffeehouses in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury, and South-of-Market districts and a strong following of young and old. Very involved in the local SF music scene, Avi is an assistant engineer and intern at hip Bay Area record label and recording studio ”˜Talking House Productions’ and he also hosts a weekly local songwriter showcase at The Brainwash Café.

His poetry has been published in the San Francisco State University newspaper and received acclaim and approval from poets, authors and survivors of Hurricane Katrina at benefit poetry reading in New Orleans. His biting song entitled “How is your coffee, Mr. President?” received attention and overwhelming applause, even in red states like Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee, for its comical critique of President Bush.

Avi has toured the United States inside and out with Sebastian Clark (LA), the band ”˜Quarry Hill’ (Philadelphia), and Jason Reischel (NY) and performed in the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and South Korea. Doing so has earned him a mailing list of 500 devout fans. He performs around 100 shows a year.

He is also a former member of successful LA rock band, and SXSW favourites, E>K>U>K and co-wrote and performed with them on songs for the "Epic Movie" Soundtrack (2007 Fox).

His debut record "Forty Years Too Late" was released on February 9th, 2004 and his sophomore EP "New York" was released on May 30th, 2006. A live EP of a KXLU Los Angeles performance was also released in limited number on a parent label of fLA. A new full length record is scheduled for release on fLA as fLA 7012-LP in Spring of 2008.

“We stare at the ending before it’s begun,
but it only makes the middle lose all its fun,
because we both did the race
and though neither of us won,
we ran.”
-Avi Vinocur
